Notice that I did not say "The New Improved Me". After probably 3 years of being in denial I finally made the journey to the eye doctor. It first hit me a couple of years ago when my license expired and I had to stick my forehead on the little thing at the DMV and read the signs, "man that was strange they were a little blurry, don't remember that last time I took this test." I called my brother later that week and told him that and he said it was just beginning and that he had trouble clearly seeing them at his last test too. I just let it slide, whatever. Lately though I have noticed that reading big signs far away I have to decipher some of the words to know what the entire phrase is on the sign - not so good. So to the doctor I went.
First - the Dr. couldn't believe that I had never had an eye exam. What the hell for, I could see just fine?
Second - I questioned everything he was going to do with these high tech machines, these are my eyes and my only eyes your dealing with, (especially after the phone call with my brother where he said they were going to poke my eye with needles).
Third - The infamous letter find! So now they have made it where you can't even cheat on these tests because they are on the computer and once you read one they jumble up the letters - damn. So I am taking the test and keep telling the doc, I just don't like to fail, I don't want to fail. So I start reading a line and tell him, "okay, the first one is "S" then next one I can't really read, the next one is a "C" or a "G" - and so on. After I can look with both eyes I see that my multiple choice didn't even work - it was an "O" - shit! I Failed.
So all in all I failed my damn eye exam and broke down and bought the glasses and wear them when I am driving or walking around or in a meeting when I need to see stuff on a board far away, sitting at my computer or just doing things around the house I don't need them, so I don't wear them. Katelynn of course picked up the word "glasses" in one day and has been pretty good about not trying to rip them off my face. At work a couple people have told me I now look "smart" (what did I look like before?) and that I look like a librarian (great, I know that was the image I was shooting for). So hear you go - there are 2 pics of me and my glasses.

Sparkling White Sangria
Here is a white wine recipe that we tried out on Christmas Day. It was very easy to make and it must have been good because we drank it all! Enjoy.
1 cup Karo light Corn Syrup
1 orange, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
1 lime, sliced
1/2 cup orange flavored liqueur (I didn't have this so I used some Peach tree Schnapps)
1 bottle dry white wine
1 bottle (12 oz) club soda or seltzer, chilled
additional fresh fruit (optional)
1. In large pitcher (and they do mean large) combine corn syrup, orange, lemon, and lime slices and liqueur. Let stand 20 to 30 min., stirring occasionally.
2. Stir in wine and lemon juice. Refrigerate.
3. Just before serving, add soda and ice cubes.
If desired, garnish with additional fruit.

Belated Birthday Present
So all who know my brother well, know that he waits until the last possible minute to do things, or after in this case. Here is a picture of Katelynn and me holding her Purple Care Bear that Jeff bought her for her birthday (in September). (I do have to tell you that it did come before X-mas, but this is when we took the picture). The Care Bear smells like lavender (or the contents of Jeff's kitchen since this is where it presumably lived for a couple of months before shipping) and came with a little Care Bear movie on DVD. He also sent her a Vikings blanket that we now keep in the car for her.
So yes, Uncle Jeff did come through only a little late.
Our next question to him is "Christmas in July?" ha ha -

From Miss Katelynn
I am turning into a big girl now! I am 16 months old. I can run around the house and chase the meow's and I like to tease my parents by running up to them and then running away really fast. I am talking and copying everything they say, my new words today were - Monkey, crazy, cake!, and excuse ( for excuse me). I am also polite and say my please and thank you's. I also said my first 2 word sentence today - pretty Dada, (I was putting a beaded necklace on him to make him beautiful, like me!) I now am learning to eat with a fork, but still need some help from my mommy. I get to use my own plate when we eat meals, (mommy likes this because it doesn't make such a mess of my high chair) and I know how to ask for milk, juice or water, whatever my preference is at the time. My favorite thing right now is "Elmo" I just can't get enough of him, see the picture of me in my Elmo sweater, I saw it at Kohl's and wasn't leaving the store without it. I also have Elmo shoes and my mommy said she would get me a little Elmo video to watch soon. I now have longer hair and am sporting little barrett's and a pony tail on the top of my head, I sit very still and say "pretty, pretty" every morning while mommy brushes my hair and puts the pony tail in. I like it because it keeps the hair out of my eyes. I hope you like my new pictures! (P.S. my mommy is sporting something new on her face to, she said she would show every later, watch for a future post and picture).
Love and Miss you all - Love, Katelynn Rose

Toddler's and Airplanes
Toddler's Temper Ousts Family From Plane
AirTran Airways on Tuesday defended its decision to remove a Massachusetts couple from a flight after their crying 3-year-old daughter refused to take her seat before takeoff.
AirTran officials said they followed Federal Aviation Administration rules that children age 2 and above must have their own seat and be wearing a seat belt upon takeoff.
"The flight was already delayed 15 minutes and in fairness to the other 112 passengers on the plane, the crew made an operational decision to remove the family," AirTran spokeswoman Judy Graham-Weaver said.
Julie and Gerry Kulesza, who were headed home to Boston on Jan. 14 from Fort Myers, said they just needed a little more time to calm their daughter, Elly.
"We weren't given an opportunity to hold her, console her or anything," Julie Kulesza said in a telephone interview Tuesday.
The Kuleszas said they told a flight attendant they had paid for their daughter's seat, but asked whether she could sit in her mother's lap. The request was denied.
She was removed because "she was climbing under the seat and hitting the parents and wouldn't get in her seat" during boarding, Graham-Weaver said.
The Orlando-based carrier reimbursed the family $595.80, the cost of the three tickets, and the Kuleszas flew home the next day.
They also were offered three roundtrip tickets anywhere the airline flies, Graham-Weaver said.
The father said his family would never fly AirTran again.

Playdate Pictures
Here are a couple of pictures that were taken on Saturday at one of our monthly playdates. Me and a bunch of friends that had kids roughly at the same time all take turns hosting a playdate our house with goodies to eat and let the kids enjoy playing amongst each other. This is great for us moms to get to talk about the kids and life in general and just enjoy every ones company.

Chapter 4 - The Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands
Men Have Feelings? Really? You're Kidding!
The obvious issue here is that men are generally not all the forthcoming about their feelings, at least not in the way we wives are. Men are not like women who talk and discuss and describe feelings and happenings. Men are more likely to talk about a challenge they have faced, or will have to face. Per Dr. Laura numerous affairs start because us women/wives do not realize that our men have feelings and a majority of men she has asked about why they had an affair stated "It's about the how she made me feel about myself."
One story is about a woman who was sitting and with her best friend, chatting. Within the conversation that she had with her friend she wanted to ask her a question, but first said she hoped she wasn't offending her or hurting her feelings before she asked her a question she wanted to ask. Her friend said, "Nothing you do will ever offend or bothers me. But my husband regularly bothers and offends me. (Reading that puts things into perspective for me, again I have stated in the past, why would we treat our friends better than our husbands?)
Per Dr. Laura, if wives can't easily slip our of their self-centered mode, "It's all about me feelings", perhaps they can at least try to consider that the perspective presented here could give them more of what they want - The main source of husband's bad attitudes, negative responses, and disappointing behaviors is their wives' attitude toward them and their feelings. Plain and simple.
Here are a couple of examples that Dr. Laura gives on playing on feelings for one couple:
1. When a wife wants to go do something wither her friends, she says he should trust her and allow her that freedom. When he feels that he needs some alone or buddy time, she says that he doesn't love her or want to spend time with her - even when she's invited. It's all about her feelings - not his.
2. When she spends money, it's okay because it's something she "needed", and she should have the freedom to spend money when she wants to buy something. When he wants to spend money, she calls him irresponsible. It's all about her feelings - not his.
3. They see her family about twice a week. When he wants to see his family, she complains that he's not being sensitive to her feelings about her family. It's all about her feelings - not his.
(In my family I think this may apply to all the in-laws, man or woman, on the Dickhaus side, we are a tight clan that doesn't want to be separated, ever, I can hear it now -What? What other family - oh yours, that's right.)
4. "Basically", the husband writes, "it's her priorities that matter. She'll have the whole weekend planned, while I'd love to have some downtime together. She'll say that I'm not supporting her. "It's all about her feelings - not his."
One husband wrote this in" Despite our rugged outward appearance, most men tend to have delicate psyches. I know four very happily married men. In each case their wives make a point of stroking their egos and making them feel that they approve of them. Consequently, these men practically worship their wives.
Dr. Laura believes that women in general have been taught to disdain the "male ego", ascribing to it a sense of phoniness, immaturity, and weakness. Ladies, what makes the male ego issue any different from our "body ego" issue? Our husbands have to tell us our bodies are perfect and that these pants don't make us look fat because (a) we don't want to hear the truth, (b) we can't handle the truth, and/or (c) if they tell us the truth, then we're hurt, they're mean and insensitive, and the relationship is shot down in mid-flight. We, as women want to know that we are lovely and desirable because of our shapes. They, as men, want to know that they are desirable by us because of their prowess in providing for their families, satisfying their women sexually, and having the strength and leadership to confront challenges and protect their family and values. They need that and they need that from us. A wife can tear down a husband's necessary sense of strength or importance more easily with a look or a comment than can torture in a prison camp. Their wives approval is as important as oxygen; surviving their wives lack of approval is emasculation.
Here are a couple things that Dr. Laura states every man needs from his wife and in summary watch the words and looks and thoughts coming from your mind and mouth because they go deeper than us woman actually think, and I believe that men hold onto the nasty things we may call them longer than we do.
* What every man wants is for his woman to make him feel that he is strong and the head of the household.
* A man wants respect, kindness, and love from his woman.
* A man needs his woman to show him that she needs his strength to help her through her life.
* A man needs enthusiastic approval, appreciation, and respect from his wife for being a competent man, husband, and father.
* A man needs his wife to show some interest in his interests, especially when it's an activity she may not "get" or like. Just being there is important.
* A man needs his wife to greet him after work with love and enthusiasm.
* A man needs to know that his wife is sexually satisfied by him.
* A man needs his wife's encouragement in order to be a man.
There is a lot more stories and comments to this chapter, but I think these things summarize what us women can do to a man's ego/feelings and listed are things that we should be saying or doing instead. Good Luck !

Mommy Websites
Here are a couple of new websites I've been checking out.
http://howsmynanny.com/ - this one you can order a license plate for your stroller and if you have a nanny people can report bad nannies, thought that was kinda neat and may make some parents feel good.
http://www.modernmom.com/site/home.php
This is a website for the modern mom and each weeks posts different must haves for moms that want to spend more time with family and less time on housework etc. (They just recently posted the Scooba as a must have!)

I Completely Agree with This !
I don't know if you can read this, but it basically states that anyone receiving state assistance of any kind should have to pass a urine drug test before they can receive their services. I think they should have to pass one every month before they get their checks. The guy in the article is stating that he has to pass a urine test to have his job, to get his paycheck, and to pay his taxes so the government can hand it out to whom they choose.
I completely agree with this guy - why hasn't this law been passed yet?

PETA phone call
You guys need to listen to this segment from Louis and Floorwax. This is mind blowing and I could hardly believe it. DO NOT support PETA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Highlight this address and right click to select "Go to."
http://www.startcolorado.com/iac/KRFX-FM/petacall3.mp3
This phone call is about 10 minutes long, but worth listening to. For those of you who don't know with all this snow out here (which we wish Minnesota would keep or take from us) and the snow storms there are a bunch of free grazing cattle that are pretty much stranded out in the middle of nowhere with nowhere to go and no way to get them food, I believe the last I heard was that 3,500 have already died from the conditions. The National Guard has stepped in and is dropping bails of hay from helicopters for them now. This is a call from a radio station out here trying to give PETA some money to help the cows.

More Vikings Pics
Here are a couple more pics. I better tell this part of the story too or I will be in for it.
Sunday morning we actually left the hotel early so we would have about an hour to walk around the stores and tailgate parties before going into the stadium (this has not happened for us in the past because we always leave too late). So we are almost to the parking spot and sitting at a stop light and I get this weak feeling in my stomach and think "oh shit" and I tell everyone "I forgot my ticket at the hotel". Every head turns and looks at me, like are you kidding and of course then they ask, Are you Kidding? No, I say, nobody did a ticket check before we left the hotel and Jeff handed me my ticket this morning and I stuck it on the table and never put it in my purse. Let me tell you it was not a happy crew in the car and around we turn back to the hotel and Jeff ran up and grabbed my ticket and back towards the stadium we went with no time to look at anything. Sorry guys - lesson here - always do a ticket check.
Vikings Game 2006
Okay, so Jeff (the procrastinator) has finally sent me some pictures that he took of the Vikings game I flew home for this December, dang was that only a few short weeks ago?
What a blast I had, shopping all day at the Mall of America (with no child gettin upset when I stop the stroller to look at something) stopping for lunch and then shopping some more. We met Pam & Stuart and Reid back at the mall and my cousin Jayce once Jeff, Tonah, and Landon got to the cities. So here are some pictures of the game. I can't wait to do it again next year, but we will have to see, there may be too many trips next year that we need go home for short weekends, but we will see! For those of you who haven't met Jeff's fiance Tonah here are some pictures that she is in as well - we are all very excited that she will be a part of our family, we are still trying to feel out how she will do introducing herself as Tonah Dickhaus though !

All the visitors have gone
Tonight I dropped my grandma and mom off at the airport at about 5pm.
After 10 days of company it is nice to have a night of nothing, although I don't think Dan or I would have mind if my mother would have stayed, it is so easy to raise 1 child with 3 adults, why haven't people thought about this before? (oh yeah, I think a 3-way marriage is illegal).
Thank the Lord that grandparents are legal! We had a great time playing cards and visiting and Dan enjoyed that my mother got up with Katelynn every morning except for one, but his lazy days are now over. Katelynn must have enjoyed spending time with grandma Renee as well and grandma must have worn her out everyday because she was sleeping until almost 8am every morning, but now Katelynn's lazy days are over as well, she has to be up at 7am and we are out the door at 7:15 (or at least attempt to be).
So let me give you a quick run down of the problems that did occur.
1 - Before the company came our DVD player went out of commission (not too worry we have a PlayStation 2 that can play DVDs as well, we were covered).
2 - A couple of days after Christmas and leaving my mom and Katelynn alone during the days our big screen TV decides to also go on the fritz, we turn it on and there is no screen, which means no cable, no movies, no playing the new game I bought where you need both the TV & the DVD player. (not too worry we have the extended warranty, but the guy doesn't come until Friday).
3 - Sunday Football. The last Vikings game is going to be on and the Broncos game to see if they make the playoffs is going to be on. Problem - the only TV with a DirecTV hook-up and a screen that works is in our bedroom, we made it work, took in a chair and Katelynn's toys and had a fun day hanging out in our bedroom. (This is why you should always make your bed every morning).
4 - Grandma tries to burn the house down. Grandma was going to make Katelynn some oatmeal for breakfast and was boiling some water and didn't realize until I saw it that it was a black plastic bowl (and pampered chef!) and was about to start melting. Close call.
5 - I came down with a fierce and vicious head cold on Friday, Dec. 29th (thank goodness for snow days) and wasn't up to snuff for the entire weekend (still am not up to par, this sinus crap is hanging on for dear life).
All in all we love to have company and visitors - the more the merrier. This weekend Dan has company coming to Denver for the Stock show and they should be stopping by the house one day while they are here - time to get the house back in order and get the Christmas crap down and put away!
Until Next time - Taryn.

All in all we love to have company and visitors - the more the merrier. This weekend Dan has company coming to Denver for the Stock show and they should be stopping by the house one day while they are here - time to get the house back in order and get the Christmas crap down and put away!
Until Next time - Taryn.
More Christmas Pics
Here are more Christmas Pictures. The green frog that we took pictures of was given to Katelynn by Grandma Dickhaus, it is a leap frog toy that let her and other members of our family say their names and special messages to Katelynn, so when the frog (we call him Tad) talks he says Katelynn lives in Milliken and has 2 cats, Shelby and Zipper, she really likes him.
Christmas 2006
We had such a wonderful Christmas this year I don't even know where to start. Besides last year it has really just been me and Dan here for Christmas and this year we had family and company! It started with my mom and grandma flying out from Minnesota and a friend of ours moving to Colorado Springs from Minnesota.
Christmas Eve included myself, Dan, and Katelynn, my mom and our friend Tim. We had lasagna for supper (made from scratch by your truly - for those of you who think I can't cook). We opened gifts after supper and Katelynn went to bed around 9pm that night. The adults drank some beer and wine and we played a few games of darts and the party ended up in the garage (of course, we can't smoke in the house) and some of us drank too much and stayed up too late.
Christmas Day included myself, Dan, and Katelynn, my mom and our friend Tim, my aunt, uncle and 2 cousins and my grandma. Let me tell you, there is a lot of work that goes into hosting Christmas, I had to get up early and start (help my mom) make appetizers, throw a ham in the oven, I made a white sangria wine drink and some hot dip for veggies and trying to keep the house in some kind of order and get everyone showered before company arrived -whew!
But it all went off without a hitch and we had a blast, we visited and then we ate, then opened some presents, more darts, and then we played a game called "Catch Phrase", I have to say this is a fun game that anyone would enjoy (even Dan played and liked it).
We had such a wonderful Christmas that next year we may just have to jump on an airplane (or if Dan has his way in the truck) and make our way home to spend it with family again, we know each year that a little piece of our holiday is missing without family, but you really don't feel completely until you have it again.
Thank you everyone for making our 2006 Christmas so memorable.
